POSITION DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Full-time position
* Location: Eastern Office, Takoma Park, MD
* Supervision: This position reports to the Director of Program Services based in the Eastern Office
* Focus of Work: The successful ICL Program Manager candidate will have a mix of abilities in program delivery, program management, and education about capacity building. We seek someone who thrives with a great variety of tasks each day. Direct delivery of capacity building services (consulting, training, facilitation, and coaching) will approximate about 50% of the job. Management of grant-funded and regionally-based initiatives and large programs with partners and groups will constitute about 20% of job responsibilities. The position requires close coordination with all ICL staff and our consultant network, particularly in outreach and education efforts.

Deliver Meeting Facilitation, Consulting, Coaching, and Training Services:

  • Assess the immediate and long-term capacity building needs of volunteer leaders, staff, organizations, and networks/coalitions;
  • Utilize outcomes-based evaluation and clear performance measures in all efforts with leaders, groups, and networks, as well as within ICL’s internal evaluation efforts;
  • Actively strengthen organizations’ strategic impact, fundraising success, and human capacity by utilizing a wide range of integrated capacity building approaches;
  • Engage and strengthen leaders’ capacities through personal action planning and coaching; and,
  • Support and facilitate the successful development of networks, coalitions, and other collaborative efforts through process design, meeting facilitation, and coaching.

Provide ICL Education and Outreach:

  • Participate in internal work to create and utilize high-quality evaluation measures that help ICL staff learn, evolve programs to meet needs, and market ICL programs and services;
  •  Participate in the program team’s efforts to interest leaders in specific initiatives, programs, workshops, and tools;
  • Support leaders and partners to understand ICL custom designed services, utilize regional programs, and create new program and services;
  • Contact leaders and groups through meetings, phone calls and email to assist in understanding capacity building and how it might benefit them; and,
  • Contribute to the writing, editing, and production for ICL’s website text, e-newsletter, Facebook communication, and bi-annual program brochure.

Manage Regional Initiatives and Large Programs:

  • Manage, plan and deliver multi-year initiatives which include promotion/outreach, coordination of the delivery of targeted programs and services, coordination of initiative activities with other ICL programs, evaluation of activities and outcomes, foundation reporting, and maintaining regular contact with sponsoring foundations;
  • Working with ICL staff and partnering organizations, create collaborative approaches to understanding and meeting the capacity building needs of leaders, groups and networks.
  • Provide clear contracting, supervision and support to consultants working with regional initiatives or custom-designed programs; and,
  • Develop budgets and track monthly expenditures for regional initiatives and large programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A passion for strengthening leaders, organizations, and networks working toward positive environmental protection, conservation, and community health goals and outcomes
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of nonprofit experience preferred, especially in managing programs or organizations
  • Direct experience with multicultural teams, management support programs, leadership development programs, or volunteer development programs preferred
  • A strong understanding of and skills in adult learning, consulting, coaching and participatory facilitation methodologies
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, in particular via telephone and face-to-face venues
  • Strong writing skills, including the capacity to synthesize and simplify concepts and processes
  • A desire to work in a team setting, and to make contributions to building the effectiveness of ICL and our programs
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, small office
  • A well-developed sense of humor
  • Minimum of a B.A. or B.S. or equivalent training; Masters degree in related field preferred; additional professional development in consulting, coaching, training practices, organizational development theory, or nonprofit management encouraged
  • Experience with or a strong knowledge of environmental, environmental justice, environmental health, community engagement, and conservation issues desirable.
