Environmental and conservation nonprofits often mature in a similar pattern of four phases:  Volunteer Based, "The Leap" (Hiring Staff), Shared Governance, and Institutional. Each phase brings a certain set of opportunities and challenges for its programs, systems, board, staff, and responsiveness. By taking a long view and anticipating these patterns, leaders can guide organizational development and change more effectively.
